At the initiative of the National Wine Agency of Georgia and by decision of the Government of Georgia, National Wine Day is celebrated annually on May 8 to promote Georgian wine as a symbol of the country’s identity, cultural heritage, and centuries-old winemaking traditions.

According to the National Wine Agency, a conference will be held on May 8 as part of the celebrations, bringing together representatives of Georgia’s wine industry, members of the scientific community, and international wine professionals.

The agency noted that John Barker, Director General of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), will visit Georgia specifically for the occasion.

The conference will focus on the achievements and ongoing activities of the “Georgian Vine and Wine Culture Research” scientific project. Speakers from various countries are also expected to discuss the global wine market, emerging challenges, export market specifics, and opportunities for expanding into international markets.

As part of National Wine Day events, wine tastings, educational activities, and entertainment programs dedicated to Georgia’s 8,000-year-old wine culture will be held at Gudiashvili Square. The celebrations will conclude with a musical and theatrical performance at the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theater.

The National Wine Agency emphasized that Georgia is internationally recognized as the homeland of wine, with an uninterrupted tradition of viticulture and winemaking dating back 8,000 years. According to the agency, archaeological discoveries, the traditional qvevri winemaking method, and wine’s central role in Georgian culture together make Georgian wine one of the country’s most important national values.
