Georgia targets major expansion of maritime, railway and airport capacity - Georgian Economy Minister
Georgian Economy Minister Mariam Kvrivishvili on Tuesday said the Georgian Government’s goal was to double the capacity of the country’s maritime and railway networks and triple the overall capacity of its airport infrastructure.
In her remarks, Kvrivishvili noted that the volume of cargo handled at Georgia’s seaports and terminals increased by 24% in January-August 2026 compared with the same period last year, while the volume of cargo transported by rail rose by 11% year-on-year, reaching a record high for the past decade.
“It is particularly noteworthy that transit rail freight increased by 14%, which is a key issue in today’s discussion. This growth obliges us to prepare for the next stage of corridor development. Georgia is addressing this task through a strategic 10-year transport development roadmap, which envisages approximately $7 billion in investment in priority infrastructure projects through 2032”, she said.
“Our goal is to double the capacity of maritime and railway networks and triple the overall capacity of the country’s airport infrastructure. We are already working in this direction”, Kvrivishvili concluded.

Georgian Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Mariam Kvrivishvili met Chairman of BAIC International (Beijing Automotive International Development Co., Ltd.), Fu Jun at the company’s head office.
