Minister of Economy says visitors to Georgia can now travel between Tbilisi and Batumi in just four hours
“Visitors arriving in our country will now be able to travel from Tbilisi to Batumi, and from Batumi back to our capital, in just four hours,” stated the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Mariam Kvrivishvili.
She noted that this is a landmark day for Georgian Railway, as reducing travel times was one of the central pledges for passenger rail services.
“When we presented Georgian Railway’s performance figures alongside our strategic plans for the current year and the upcoming two years, one of the primary commitments and key objectives for passenger services was to cut the travel time on the Tbilisi–Batumi route from five and a half hours down to four,” the Minister of Economy noted.
According to the Minister, this was a highly complex operational undertaking, particularly vital for improving domestic mobility across the country.
Mariam Kvrivishvili expressed her gratitude to Georgian Railway for their work on this project, highlighting that reduced travel times will have a remarkably positive impact on the tourism sector.
“I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Georgian Railway for their vital work and effective execution. This will boost domestic tourism, international tourism, and overall internal mobility across the country,” the Minister of Economy declared.

“Travel time on the Tbilisi-Batumi and Batumi-Tbilisi railway lines has been reduced to 4 hours,” said Lasha Abashidze, Director General of Georgian Railway company.
According to Abashidze, this is a significant improvement compared to the previous 5 hours and 30 minutes.
“Recently, we carried out major capital works on the tracks and infrastructure, which enabled us to increase speeds on certain sections. This allowed us to lift speed limits and travel from Tbilisi to Batumi safely in 4 hours,” he said.
Lasha Abashidze further noted that Georgian Railway completed reconstruction works at several train stations; The company’s goal is to fully upgrade not only the stations on the main lines but also the suburban stations.
“The rehabilitation of 5–7 stations is effectively already underway, and we intend to add another 5 stations this year. We also aim to fully complete the station rehabilitation next year,” he said.
