“I am pleased to announce that from December, the historic Borjomi–Bakuriani railway, our very own Kukushka, so loved by everyone, will return to its route,” said Mariam Kvrivishvili, Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, in a speech at a ceremony marking Railway Workers’ Day.

According to Mariam Kvrivishvili, the railway connects people, cities and regions, and creates new opportunities for the country’s development.

“The rehabilitation works are nearing completion, and the design of the carriages selected specially for this project blends beautifully with Bakuriani’s natural surroundings and historic character. We wanted this to be not merely a refurbished train, but to recapture the atmosphere and spirit that have accompanied this unique route for decades,” the Minister said.

image Georgian Railway to receive around GEL 2 billion in investment over three years, up to 50 new locomotives on order

09.10.2026.19:13

“A year ago, one of Georgian Railway’s major challenges was its ageing rolling stock. As a result of changes in the company’s management approach, operational processes have improved, costs have been cut, and the resources saved have been put towards the company’s development,” the Director General of Georgian Railway said at an event marking Railway Workers’ Day.

According to Lasha Abashidze, the company has already purchased 200 new freight wagons, around 50 of which are already in Georgia, and there are plans to double this figure by the end of the year. Lasha Abashidze said that the process of purchasing up to 50 new locomotives for the railway is already underway.

“This is a truly historic process, because one of our fundamental challenges is our ageing locomotive fleet,” the Director General of Georgian Railway said.
