Wizz Air has made significant contribution to Kutaisi Airport’s development - Georgian Deputy Economy Minister
Tamar Ioseliani, Georgia’s Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, on Tuesday marked the 14th anniversary of Kutaisi International Airport and the 10th anniversary of the establishment of Wizz Air’s base at the airport, saying the two milestones were closely and uniquely linked.
In her remarks, Ioseliani noted that the first flight from Kutaisi International Airport was operated by Wizz Air to Kyiv, while the establishment of the airline’s first base at the airport in 2016 marked a crucial step in the airport’s development.
“We have grown from seven routes to 24 in cooperation with our key strategic partner, which is highly significant. Overall, we now fly to 31 cities across 16 countries. It is also worth noting that Wizz Air, the airport’s primary partner, has made a substantial contribution to the development of Kutaisi International Airport over the years. This is clearly reflected in the figures and evident in the results”, Ioseliani said.
“In 2023, Kutaisi International Airport served 1.6 million passengers; in 2024, we served approximately 1.7 million passengers; and in 2025, we saw very impressive figures, with more than 1.8 million passengers served”, she continued.
Ioseliani also highlighted the continued positive trend in passenger traffic at Kutaisi International Airport in 2026, noting that the airport recorded strong figures during the first eight months of the year.
“Despite the challenges facing the global aviation sector, Kutaisi International Airport is maintaining its high standards”, she concluded.

Wizz Air base plays vital role in driving Georgia’s aviation growth - UAG Director

“Wizz Air has cemented its position as one of the most vital players in Georgia’s aviation sector, with its Kutaisi hub playing a crucial role in that success,” stated Levan Moseshvili, General Director of United Airports of Georgia.
Moseshvili was speaking at a formal ceremony marking a double milestone: the 14th anniversary of Kutaisi International Airport and the 10th anniversary of Wizz Air’s operational base at the site.
“Kutaisi International Airport acts as a crucial gateway connecting the Imereti region to the world, driving both local economic development and tourism. Our strategic partner, Wizz Air, holds a truly special place in that growth story,” Moseshvili said.
He noted that Wizz Air operated its inaugural flight from Kutaisi exactly 14 years ago, before establishing a permanent operational base at the airport four years later, in 2016.
“This was far more than simply adding new flight routes. It is a major leap forward for the airport and the wider region. A permanent base unlocked continuous flights, bringing new destinations, higher flight frequencies, and local jobs.
What began with a single station-based aircraft has now expanded to a fleet of four. Over ten years, Wizz Air’s base has become a cornerstone of Kutaisi Airport’s growth. But the impact goes well beyond soaring passenger numbers and new routes: it has created skilled jobs, given local staff vital industry experience, and driven the broader growth of Georgian aviation.
That is why marking 10 years of Wizz Air’s base is not just an important milestone for the airline; it is a landmark moment in the history of Kutaisi Airport itself,” Moseshvili added.
According to United Airports of Georgia, Wizz Air has consistently maintained its role as Georgia’s leading airline by passenger volume in recent years.
