Georgian PM announces record cargo turnover at Batumi Port amid push to expand port infrastructure
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said on Thursday that cargo turnover at the Port of Batumi had reached a record high, adding that the year would undoubtedly become a record-breaking one for the port in terms of cargo volumes.
Speaking to journalists, Kobakhidze stressed that every effort must be made to ensure the further development and maximum expansion of the country’s port infrastructure in the future.
“This direction is also, of course, very important for our country. It is important to note that cargo turnover in the port of Batumi has reached a record level. Based on the data of the first seven months, we can say that this year will definitely be a record year for the port of Batumi in terms of cargo turnover, and everything must be done to develop our port infrastructure as much as possible in the future”, the PM said.
“The port of Batumi is, of course, very important, as is the port of Poti. You know that we are actively working on creating the infrastructure of the Anaklia port, and by 2029 it is already planned to receive the first ships in the port of Anaklia and complete the design works of the first phase”, he concluded.

The Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, accompanied by the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Mariam Kvrivishvili, and the Chairman of the Government of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara, Zurab Pataradze, has inspected the newly modernised educational and training infrastructure at the Batumi State Maritime Academy.

The Academy has upgraded its educational simulators for the navigational bridge, cargo handling, stability, and engine room compartments, enabling students to undergo practical training in full alignment with modern international standards. In addition, dedicated spaces have been established for fire safety training and survival-at-sea exercises.
The PM emphasised the vital importance of the Batumi Maritime Academy, noting that strengthening it is key to the wider reform of the education system.
“Batumi Maritime Academy cultivates a hugely significant asset from an economic perspective. Our seafarers make an immense contribution to the growth of our economy, and consequently, we will continue to give this higher education institution our unwavering attention. Enhancing this facility will be a major component of our broader reform,” Irakli Kobakhidze stated.
The Prime Minister was also briefed on upcoming projects planned for the institution. It was highlighted that the facilities of the Batumi State Maritime Academy will undergo a comprehensive rehabilitation, with its infrastructure fully modernised to meet contemporary global standards.
