Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Tuesday participated in the Multilateral Partnership Summit held during the high-level week of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The summit was opened by European Council President António Costa. In his address, Kobakhidze underscored the importance of international peace, security and conflict prevention.

The Prime Minister spoke about the challenges facing global stability and stressed the need for stronger multilateral partnerships to prevent conflicts and support their peaceful resolution.

Kobakhidze also addressed developments in Georgia and the wider region.

“The ongoing occupation of 20 percent of Georgia’s territory continues to affect the lives and rights of people living there. We remain committed to the peaceful resolution of the conflict, including through de-occupation, reconciliation and the restoration of trust among conflict-affected communities. International support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity remains an important part of this process. Effective multilateralism also requires closer regional cooperation. Countries within the same region face common security and economic challenges, and enhanced cooperation enables a more effective response to these issues”, he said.

“The South Caucasus is undergoing a period of significant transformation, with increasing attention being paid to its economic and strategic potential. Today, there are broader opportunities for practical regional cooperation. We welcome the progress achieved in the peace process among our neighbours and believe that strengthened regional cooperation can create new opportunities in areas such as trade, connectivity and economic development”, Kobakhidze added.

The summit concluded with the adoption of a declaration highlighting the importance of joint efforts, respect for the principles of international law and multilateral partnerships amid growing pressure on the international order.
