The Chairman of Tbilisi Sakrebulo (City Assembly), Zurab Abashidze, spoke about the rehabilitation of Rustaveli Avenue during an ongoing session at the Assembly.

According to Abashidze, the comprehensive rehabilitation of Rustaveli Avenue is a project of historic magnitude that carries vital significance for the capital.

As Zurab Abashidze stated, Rustaveli Avenue is not merely Tbilisi’s principal thoroughfare, but one of the primary symbols of the nation’s history, culture, and identity. He stressed that the renewal is therefore being carried out with the utmost responsibility and to the highest standards.

The Assembly Chairman also detailed the works scheduled under the first phase of the project. He explained that underground infrastructure will undergo a complete overhaul, with water supply, storm drainage, and gas supply networks replaced, and modern underground waste management containers installed. Abashidze highlighted the substantial contribution of Georgian Water and Power (GWP), which is investing 12.5 million GEL into the project. He stated that the company will fully renew over five kilometres of water supply and sewerage networks, construct new utility junction chambers, and install modern fire hydrants. Furthermore, road infrastructure, pavements, outdoor lighting, and green spaces will be refurbished, with new surface pedestrian crossings installed and a fully accessible environment created for persons with disabilities.

“Naturally, we understand that works on this scale will temporarily cause a degree of disruption for both Tbilisi residents and visitors to the capital. However, I am confident this is an essential step. Its benefits our city will enjoy for decades to come. The rehabilitation of Rustaveli Avenue means preserving historical heritage, creating a modern urban environment, and making yet another major investment in Tbilisi’s future,” declared Zurab Abashidze.
