Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Davit Songulashvili attended the opening ceremony of the international agricultural exhibition Belagro 2026 during an official visit to Minsk, Republic of Belarus.

At the Georgian pavilion, Minister Songulashvili welcomed Belarus Vice-Premier Yuri Shuleiko, Minister of Agriculture and Food Yuri Gorlov, and Director-General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), Qu Dongyu.

“This year, Georgian products are being showcased at the international exhibition Belagro 2026, one of the most significant exhibitions of its kind in the region, for the very first time. The Georgian stand has drawn remarkably large crowds, which speaks clearly to the strong interest in Georgian produce. We expect this enthusiasm to translate into concrete partnerships and new export agreements, which will in turn support the growth of agri-food production, boost exports, and strengthen the national economy,” said Minister Songulashvili.

Deputy Foreign Minister Aleksandre Khvtisiashvili emphasised that the Belarusian market holds considerable promise for Georgian exporters and must be utilised to its fullest potential.

“It is of great importance to Georgia to develop relationships with partner countries grounded in mutual respect and shared interests. Visits of this nature, and participation in events at such a high level, serve precisely that purpose. The Belarusian market is particularly attractive from an export perspective, and our clear aim is to make the most of every opportunity it presents,” said Deputy Minister Khvtisiashvili.

Georgia’s pavilion at Belagro 2026 was presented with the support of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture and organised by the Rural Development Agency and the National Wine Agency.

Participating companies included producers of Georgian wine and agri-food products.

According to the press office of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, alongside Minister Songulashvili, the opening ceremony was attended by Deputy Foreign Minister Aleksandre Khvtisiashvili, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Lasha Dolidze, Chairman of the National Wine Agency Levan Mekhuzla, Head of the National Food Agency Giorgi Iakobashvili, Deputy Director of the Rural Development Agency Giorgi Avaliani, Georgia’s Ambassador to the Republic of Belarus Giorgi Saganelidge, and Belarus’s Ambassador to Georgia Nikolai Rogashchuk.

Belagro is one of the largest international platforms in the region, bringing together representatives from the agricultural, food processing and agri-food sectors.

Georgia has been elected to the World Health Organisation’s Executive Board at the 79th session of the World Health Assembly, the Ministry of Health announced.

According to the Ministry, Georgia will be represented on the Board by First Deputy Minister of Health, Irakli Sasania.

“The Executive Board is the highest governing body shaping global health policy. Membership grants the country a unique opportunity to participate directly in strategic decision-making at a worldwide level, in setting the international health agenda, and in managing global challenges, further strengthening Georgia’s authority and influence on the international stage,” the Ministry’s statement read.

First Deputy Minister Irakli Sasania noted that the Executive Board is the WHO’s principal governing body, responsible for setting the agenda and determining the direction of global policy. Georgia’s participation, he said, represents both significant international recognition and a profound responsibility.

“A secret ballot preceded the decision at the 75th session of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe in Copenhagen, where representatives of the organisation’s 53 member states formally nominated Irakli Sasania as a candidate for the Executive Board, alongside the United Kingdom. The final confirmation of nominated candidates was then successfully concluded at the Assembly currently under way in Geneva, and the decision has come into force. During the preparatory stage leading up to Georgia’s nomination, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was actively involved alongside the Ministry of Health,” the statement confirmed.

The WHO Executive Board comprises 34 members, elected for three-year terms.

“The Board’s principal functions are to implement the decisions and policies of the Health Assembly, to provide guidance, and to manage the global health agenda. Georgia’s representation on this high-level platform marks an important step in strengthening the country’s role on the international stage,” the Ministry concluded.
