Construction begins on Shkmeri–Mravaldzali highway in Oni municipality
In accordance with a Georgian Government decree, the Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure has commenced construction on the nine-kilometre secondary Shkmeri–Mravaldzali road in the Oni municipality.
According to the Ministry of Infrastructure, the rehabilitation of the Shkmeri–Mravaldzali route is a key infrastructure project for the Racha region.
“Situated on high-mountain terrain, Shkmeri and Mravaldzali are distinguished by both their historical-cultural and tourist significance. Ancient churches stand in both villages, whilst the village of Shkmeri is home to a canyon, a karst cave, and other natural landmarks that attract numerous domestic and international visitors each year. The existing gravel track is severely damaged, making travel difficult for locals and tourists alike. In dry weather, the road kicks up thick dust, while wet conditions make travel even harder. Upon completion of the project, residents and visitors will enjoy safe, comfortable, and seamless transit. The upgraded road infrastructure will foster fuller exploitation of the region’s tourism potential and create new economic opportunities. The total cost of the works stands at nearly GEL 23 million, with project completion slated for late 2028,” the statement reads.

Georgian Water and Power (GWP) has released a statement regarding an incident that occurred within the water supply network rehabilitation area on Rustaveli Avenue.
According to the statement, a severe breach of occupational health and safety standards and contractual terms was identified, as a young child was present inside the tipper truck involved.
“During rehabilitation works on the water supply network on Rustaveli Avenue, a tipper truck belonging to a GWP contractor company drove near the edge of a trench, causing the soil to collapse and the vehicle to slide. While attempting to free the vehicle, the truck overturned, causing further damage to the trench.
No injuries resulted from the incident. Work at the site continues without interruption as normal.
Georgian Water and Power stresses that a gross violation of occupational safety regulations and contractual obligations was uncovered: a young child was inside the tipper truck.
Relevant GWP departments are investigating the event on-site to establish the exact circumstances. Immediately upon completion of the inquiry, the company will take legal measures against the contractor organisation as stipulated by contract and governing law,” the GWP statement reads.
