Measures aimed at promoting Georgian wine in the United States and increasing its recognition and demand were discussed on Friday in a meeting between David Songhulashvili, Georgia’s Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, and leading American wine journalists and industry professionals.

The meeting focused on ongoing and planned initiatives to further strengthen the position of Georgian wine in the US market.

According to Songhulashvili, the United States remains one of the key export markets for Georgian wine, while numerous marketing campaigns implemented in recent years with the support of the National Wine Agency have significantly increased awareness of Georgian wine among American consumers.

“Active cooperation with wine professionals and media representatives is essential for raising awareness of Georgian wine in the United States. Collaboration with international wine experts and journalists provides an excellent opportunity to introduce them to Georgia’s ancient winemaking methods, culture and traditions. We believe this experience will further enhance awareness of Georgian wine in the United States and highlight its uniqueness”, Songhulashvili said.

The visit of the American wine professionals was organised by the National Wine Agency’s US-based contractor, Glodow Nead Communications, LLC. During their trip to the Kartli and Kakheti regions, the visitors toured 11 wineries and wine-producing companies, where they learned about the winemaking process and explored both modern and traditional approaches to Georgian viticulture and wine production.

The delegation also received detailed information about the centuries-old history, culture and traditions of Georgian winemaking. As part of the programme, they sampled both classic and traditional Georgian wines and were introduced to Georgian cuisine and its close connection with the country’s wine culture.

Karen MacNeil, editor of the digital newsletter WineSpeed and author of The Wine Bible, said the visit provided a valuable opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Georgian wine and experience its diversity firsthand.

“Coming to Georgia from California, I had no idea how extraordinary Georgia would be, including its wine. During this trip, I tasted many delicious Georgian wines. I am immensely grateful for this experience. The ancient and unique history of your winemaking also points to a very interesting and promising future for Georgian wine”, MacNeil said.

The National Bank of Georgia (NBG), in co-operation with America’s largest banking institution, J.P. Morgan, hosted a regional roundtable meeting of central bank governors in Tbilisi.

This high-level forum marks the first time an event of this format has been convened in the region alongside J.P. Morgan.

Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze opened the summit. Delivering his address, the head of government underscored the significance of hosting a forum of such international magnitude, highlighting Georgia’s economic growth indicators and the dynamic trajectory of its financial sector. He emphasised the financial sector’s pivotal role in sustaining broader economic momentum, alongside the growing international standing of Georgian financial institutions.

Prime Minister Kobakhidze reaffirmed that his government remains committed to advancing domestic capital markets and fostering an increasingly competitive environment for foreign investment.

A primary focus of the forum centred on regional macroeconomic conditions and the structural hurdles confronting monetary policy. Delegates analysed global economic shifts and exchanged operational insights on preserving price and financial stability. Dedicated working sessions addressed asset and international reserve management amid ongoing geopolitical volatility, as well as prospects for deepening local capital markets.

The meeting is designed to encourage closer operational integration among central banks across the region, promote knowledge-sharing, and create mechanisms for a coordinated response to shared macroeconomic pressures.

“Hosting an inaugural event of this calibre within our region carries immense institutional weight. It is immensely gratifying to welcome so many esteemed peers to Tbilisi, representing nearly 15 central banks, multilateral development institutions, and international financial organisations.
Meetings of this nature are invaluable—not merely because they allow us to share perspectives on the critical forces shaping our respective economies, but because they forge an open platform for dialogue, peer-to-peer learning, and the continuous strengthening of inter-institutional ties,” stated Acting NBG Governor Natia Turnava.

According to the National Bank of Georgia, the summit brought together central bank governors, deputy governors, and senior central bank leadership from nearly 15 nations, including Hungary, Poland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Armenia, and Kazakhstan, alongside executive delegations from J.P. Morgan, the World Bank, and the Asian Development Bank.
