Rehabilitation works commence at Sioni Cathedral
Tbilisi City Hall has initiated the restoration process at Sioni Cathedral. Currently, scaffolding is being erected around the historic structure as part of the preliminary phase.
According to Tbilisi City Hall, the cathedral’s roof and bell tower are badly damaged, allowing recent rainfall to cause further harm. The walls are deteriorating, and the delicate frescoes inside are now at serious risk.
“The affected sections of the cathedral will be fully restored. As a cultural heritage monument, both the cathedral and its bell tower hold great significance. Therefore, the project will be carried out by the Tbilisi Development Fund,” officials stated.
The work is expected to be completed by the end of October. The total cost of the project is 1,220,000 GEL.
