Road reopened to traffic between Chovelidze and Javakhishvili streets as Rustaveli Avenue major upgrade progresses
Traffic has resumed along Rustaveli Avenue between Tamar Chovelidze and Mikheil Javakhishvili streets, following the completion of the initial phase of major avenue works.
According to Tbilisi City Hall, the first stage of the project involved a total overhaul of underground utilities, including water supply, sewerage, gas mains, and storm drainage networks. Subterranean cable ducting has been laid, and active efforts are underway to move overhead lines underground.
“Main infrastructure works are currently concentrated along the pavements. A new street lighting network is being installed ahead of fitting modern LED fixtures. Flagstones and kerbs are also being laid across pedestrian zones.
During the final phase of the project, a fresh asphalt surface will be laid on the carriageway, followed by road markings, new traffic lights, and urban landscaping.
With the start of the academic year bringing a sharp surge in traffic density across the capital, reopening the carriageway on schedule was a top priority. Consequently, works in this section were accelerated, though scheduled rehabilitation across the broader project area continues at pace,” stated the release from Tbilisi City Hall.
