System of so-called Yellow Boxes to be implemented in Tbilisi
At the instruction of Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze, the Municipal Transport and Urban Development Agency, in collaboration with the Ministry of Internal Affairs, wil implement the road grid system, so-called “Yellow Box”, at intersections across the city.
Kaladze said at the municipal government meeting that in international practice, this is an approved method for transport junctions with heavy traffic flow, where traffic light control is insufficient.
According to Kaladze, “resolution of similar problems is significant for traffic safety.”
Tbilisi Mayor touched on the increased number of private vehicles in Tbilisi in recent years, noting that, according to statistics, up to 900,000 vehicles are moving about Tbilisi during rush hour.
“A series of measures aimed at easing traffic congestion is already underway, including the implementation of ‘smart’ traffic lights, the reorganization of specific problem areas, the creation of a network of traffic grid boxes, and so on,” he said.
