Tbilisi City Hall announces traffic restrictions in Tbilisi ahead of May 26 celebrations
In connection with the events planned to mark Georgia’s Independence Day, traffic on Atoneli Street in the vicinity of the Presidential Palace will be restricted from 08:00 on May 20 until the end of the day on May 28.
According to the Tbilisi City Hall, vehicles travelling from Soliko Virsaladze and Giorgi Chanturia Streets towards Atoneli Street will be diverted via Italia Street in the direction of Dry Bridge, whilst drivers heading from Dry Bridge towards Atoneli Street will be routed along Virsaladze and Chanturia Streets.
“Vehicles exiting from the Zviad Gamsakhurdia Right Bank of the Mtkvari (from Rena Abzhandadze Street) will be able to travel as far as Vakhtang Orbeliani Street and then proceed in the direction of Mtkvari Street.
Furthermore, from 08:00 on May 24 through to May 28 inclusive, traffic will be restricted in the area surrounding Dry Bridge, as well as on Italia and Atoneli Streets.
During the restrictions, vehicles travelling from Saarbrücken Square towards Dry Bridge will be redirected to the Right Bank of the Mtkvari River via Giovanni Scudieri Street. Similarly, vehicles approaching Dry Bridge from Virsaladze Street will continue to Atoneli Street before turning right towards Chanturia Street.
In connection with the events planned for Independence Day, traffic will also be restricted on Freedom Square and the surrounding area.
Vehicles will be unable to travel from Kote Apkhazi and Shalva Dadiani Streets towards Freedom Square during the following times: from 20:00 on May 20 until 01:00 on May 21, and again from 10:00 to 14:00 on May 21–22.
Traffic from Shota Rustaveli Avenue towards Freedom Square will be permitted as far as the Gallery shopping centre, after which vehicles must turn back, whilst those approaching from either bank of the Mtkvari will be restricted to the Baratashvili Bridge ramp only (at the junction of Baratashvili and Pushkin Streets).
As regards alternative routes, private vehicles will be permitted to travel via Giorgi Leonidze, Pavle Ingorokva, Alexander Chavchavadze, Alexander Griboyedov, Nikoloz Baratashvili and Revaz Tabukashvili Streets, as well as the surrounding side streets.
A change will also affect Ivane Machabeli Street: the direction of traffic on this street will be reversed, and access to Giorgi Leonidze Street will be possible from Lado Asatiani Street via Machabeli Street.
Additionally, from 00:00 on May 24 until 08:00 on May 27, traffic will be restricted on Rustaveli Avenue in the direction of Freedom Square, along the section of road up to the junction with Zurab Chichinadze Street.
During this period, vehicles coming from Rustaveli Avenue will be able to travel as far as Gia Chanturia Street, from where they will turn left, pass along Chanturia and Virsaladze Streets, reach the Right Bank of the Mtkvari, and connect with Nikoloz Baratashvili Street,” the statement from Tbilisi City Hall reads.

Celebrations marking Georgia's Independence Day to take place across country

Georgia’s Independence Day will be marked with a variety of events throughout the country, organised by the Government Administration.
On May 26, the traditional conscript oath-taking ceremony will be held in the morning at Freedom Square in Tbilisi.
According to the Government Administration, this year’s Independence Day celebrations coincide with the 1,700th anniversary of Christianity being proclaimed the state religion, and they are built around the theme: “1,700 years of faith strengthening us — love uniting us.”
The Administration also notes that, in honour of this milestone, the oath-taking ceremony will be the largest ever held, and for the first time, conscripts will take their oaths simultaneously in Tbilisi and at ancient Christian churches and monasteries across Georgia’s 12 regions.
“Throughout the day, Orbeliani Square and Alexander Garden in the capital will host cultural, sporting, entertainment, and children’s events. In parallel, celebratory events will take place in town squares across the regions.
At 17:10, the national anthem will be performed simultaneously across the entire country to mark the historic moment of independence being declared. The Independence Day celebrations will conclude nationwide with gala concerts.
“On May 26 in Tbilisi, festivities will be held on Atoneli Street, in Alexander Garden, on Khazina and Pkhovi Streets, Purtsеladze Street, Vekua Street, and the surrounding areas,” the Government Administration states.
