China has launched the first rail-sea route featuring double-stack transport of half-height containers
China has launched the country’s first rail project featuring double-stack transport of “half-height” containers for subsequent shipment by sea. The inaugural train departed from Baotou, Inner Mongolia, bound for Huanghuagang Port in Hebei Province. The new route is designed for the bulk transport of goods using a rail-to-sea model, eliminating the need to transload or open containers at any point along the journey.
The project utilizes half-height containers – approximately 1.7 meters tall, compared to the standard 2.6 meters. Their reduced height allows two containers to be stacked on a single rail flatcar, maximizing capacity utilization. Upon arrival at the port, the containers are transferred directly to sea transport without the need to unload and reload their contents.
Chinese officials anticipate that this new technology will boost logistics efficiency, reduce handling operations, and cut transport costs by more than 25%. The project establishes a new rail-sea transport format in which cargo travels from origin to final destination in a single container, thereby enhancing the speed and cost-effectiveness of multimodal delivery.
