Levan Mekhuzla, Head of Georgia’s National Wine Agency, participated in the 47th World Congress of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), held in Yinchuan, China.

Mekhuzla also took part in the OIV’s 24th General Assembly, which was held alongside the congress.

The main theme of the Congress was developing new models for the global viticulture and wine sector, adapting to challenges, introducing innovations and ensuring sustainable development. Nearly 600 participants from 47 countries attended the event.

In his address to the Congress, Mekhuzla highlighted the importance of hosting the OIV World Congress in Georgia in 2027.

Georgia officially submitted its application to host the 2027 congress in 2025 and received the organisation’s full support.

“The OIV is the most important organisation in the field of viticulture and winemaking. By hosting the congress, Georgia’s role in the 8,000-year history of global viticulture and winemaking, as well as in the modern wine industry, will once again be highlighted. Holding this major international event in Georgia will further promote Georgian wine and showcase the quality-oriented reforms underway in our country’s wine sector”, Mekhuzla said.

Georgia has previously hosted major OIV events twice: the 33rd International Congress in 1962 and the organisation’s 8th General Assembly in 2010.

The International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) is an intergovernmental organisation comprising 51 member countries, including Georgia. Its work includes developing recommendations on wine production and winemaking practices, viticulture and grape processing for the food industry, as well as supporting other international intergovernmental organisations in establishing and maintaining international standards for the wine sector.
