Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has officially proclaimed May 26, 2026, as Georgia Independence Day in the nation’s capital.
The official proclamation coincides with celebrations marking the 35th anniversary of the restoration of Georgia's independence, recognising the country's enduring partnership with the United States.
In the executive document, Mayor Bowser praised Georgia as a vital member of the global community, noting its commitment to strong democratic values, dynamic economic development, and strategic international cooperation.
The proclamation also shines a spotlight on the local Georgian-American community and the Embassy of Georgia, noting that their rich heritage, traditions, and active cultural engagement greatly enhance the diversity and economic strength of the District of Columbia.

The United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday extended congratulations to the people of Georgia on the occasion of the country’s national day, reaffirming the strong partnership between the two nations.
In an official statement, Secretary Rubio said this year presents “fresh opportunities to deepen the bonds of friendship between the American and Georgian people” while advancing greater security and prosperity for both countries.
The statement reiterated the United States’ continued support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders.
Rubio emphasised that Washington stands alongside the Georgian people in their pursuit of “lasting security, freedom, and independence”.
“The United States is committed to a partnership in line with Georgia’s aspirations for a secure and prosperous future”, the statement said.
